Starting KDE 4 applications with language x-test 
currently is heavily broken.

Just try the following with KDE 4 from konsole:

KDE_LANG=x-test kaider &

Kaider starts, then after a few seconds the toolbar starts stretching
and seems to be stuck in an endless loop with button texts
getting wider and wider. I have to kill the application then.

This seems related to the language x-test, at least 
KDE_LANG=de works ok here.

I can confirm this bug with kde trunk compiled today from sources. 
x-test is broken for me since 2007-10-22.
This makes it nearly impossible to check kde applications for i18n errors.
