Description Philippe Cloutier 2007-09-13 05:55:57 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Irix

Florian Weimer reported the following in Debian #441269:
---
The file /usr/share/apps/kcontrol/pics/energybig.png contains the
Energy Star logo. I don't think this kind of use is permitted under
EPA's trademark guidelines.

kcontrol display the logo in the Display section; I'm not sure if this
comes from the same file, or if it's directly compiled into some
binary. In the latter case, this needs to be patched as well.
---
I wonder why the Energy Star logo is used there. The link is to the website's homepage, which doesn't help much with power saving configuration. Does the logo mean that the motherboard is compliant? I tested with a screen which doesn't seem to be compliant and the logo displayed anyway. So perhaps the logo should just be removed or replaced with a less confusing image?

Has this issue been solved? The logo is still displayed on KDE 4.

That bug seems to be valid in kde4 too, and now the logo is also used in powerdevil. Nobody seems to be interested though...
Comment 4 Christoph Feck 2009-05-09 20:48:27 UTC
SVN commit 965775 by cfeck:

Remove "Energy Star" logo

(as discussed on #kde-devel)

Several reasons:
* the logo had been used violating the logo guidelines
* graphics was outdated (the logo is simply blue now)
* I hated it from the day it appeared on my screen
