On media insertion or already media inserted on startup k3b irritates
at least this DVD reader drive:

System stalls in 7 second intervalls until media removal, kernel disables DMA,
drive mechanics with hyperactive recalibration activity, seems to try to read
the TOC on every media report cmd attempt and signals BUSY for more than 7 sec,
k3b hangs. On media removal k3b prints:

The DVD-Writer Drive seems not to be affected, every drive on own IDE
channel here. 5 different media tried. IDE controller is VIA 8237.
Tried several firmwares on the affected drive.
Problem was not with < ver. 1.0 k3b.
hal + dbus not invoked (killed before second test).

Are MMC cmds used which are not implemented in older (> 2years) drives?

Sebastian,

This may not be a K3b problem after all, but I do remember that you fixed some DMA-related problems recently and so I thought it best to check with you.  Thmomas now says:

"just tested on laptop, does *not* affect > 2 years old hitachi dvd reader

estimate max. affected dvd reader drives < 25% so far, i assume it is a
firmware bug in my toshiba dvd reader drive or kernel 2.6.22.x x86_64 bug."

In an attempt to clean up old bugs that are not valid for K3b 2.0 (=KDE SC 4.x port) anymore, this is now being marked as UNMAINTAINED.
If this bug is still valid for 2.0, please reopen it.
