Since most of modern laptops include a fingerprint sensor I think it would be quite convenient that kde to use those pieces of hardware.

They are used to authenticate users and thus the best place that this could fit is in kdesktop (lock functionality) and in a less immediate way but still as interesting would be to login (kdm).

As far as I've seen there a project called bioapi which manages the info coming from the hardware and interface with the system-wide facilities, i.e: PAM. Indeed I saw some documentation about log into kde using bioapi and PAM (and kdm of course).

This bug is to take care about the interface with kdm, obviously, but also with kdesktop or maybe other components (kwallet, kmail, etc...).

This is the idea, in case I could provide any info I will do. Also I'm available for any question if this hasn't been clear enough.

I'm sorry not agree with you. Indeed the kdm access is convered by that bug (I've just glanced it) but not the unlocking for the screensaver section.

Being things like that, maybe the best thing to do is invalidating this bug and creating a new one with just the unlocking features.

Kwin lock screen should already work with fingerprint. For KDM, please track bug 116682.
