Description Steve Thompson 2007-06-09 05:57:42 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I would like to see column mode editing like the ultraedit editor for Windows. To me, that's one of the best features I've ever seen. To be able to cut / copy / add to / or remove elements in a column of a document. Editing should be able to start from any line for x amount of lines etc. To see the power of column mode editing go to ultraedit.com.

that would be really nice and useful for developers which use katepart, I also use UltraEdit although I prefer using kate, I often need to use the UE's column mode

please let me explain the features of column mode:
-being able to select a rectangular area of the text
-being able to cut/copy/paste this area
-being able to select a column in some lines and write into all these selected lines
-given a rectangular selection, being able to set a character to fill this selection

Is "Block Selection Mode" what you are looking for?

In Kate KDE4: Edit->Block Selection Mode

This will let you copy/paste blocks.

features of column mode

I did not know about Block Selection Mode, yes it allows me to select a rectangular area and use copy/paste.
However it has not the last two features I've mentioned, I'm attaching a screenshot explaining these features.

Hello,

Using KWrite ver. 4.6.5 (4.6.5) "release 8" myself, I second Andrius' comment #3!

Using this kind of feature from (x)emacs makes me miss them in KWrite, to the point of being forced to switch editors to accomplish such a task. Multiple pasting is not really an option when working with long tables, code or similar.

Thank you for looking into this matter favorably.
