I have 30 albums listed under Various Artists (soundtracks, compilations, etc). When setting the playback mode to shuffle by album, only the tracks by a single artist are selected from the randomly chosen album. Which artist is chosen seemingly at random, but all tracks by that artist are played in the correct order and a new album is selected.
