Config file kwinrc is the place where the virtual desktop names and their count are stored. I don't know why they should be reset for you, it works fine here. Maybe you have some local modifications (as the fact that it works for another user suggests). Yes, it very probably reduces to that. However I have grepped and searched quite thoroughly. I was hoping someone here knew the problem or could point me in a direction. For example, what lines would a script have to contain to change these names, and where would it have to be located? This bug is a real pain in the ass. At version 4.2.2 in KDE it is still evident. Exactly when is someone going to get working on solving this???? Kubunut 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope.
