Sentry Crash Report:

Description Bob Klaase 2007-05-06 23:59:35 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages
Compiler:          gcc 4.1.1-r3
OS:                Linux

this thread says it all:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=506180

Desktopnames are reverting to old settings everytime kwin restarts.

a few things I did found out:

- only my main user has this problem, the 'guest' user doesn't, so it's not system wide.
- switching from beryl to kwin, also resets the desktop names to the 'stuck' settings.

another discovery:
the file ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc contains the desktop names in my case:

[Desktops]
 Name_1=1
 Name_2=2
 Name_3=3 Name_4=4
 Number=4

These are the names I myself configured. When I let the kde startup sequence crash (Making this file read-only works) the names are used. However on a kde startup were all goes "well", kde uses a different set of desktop names. I really would like to know which file is doing this, so I can delete it. It doens't contain the words "Name_", or any of the values it assigns to the four desktops, so I suppose it is encoded in some way.. or binairy or something..

Config file kwinrc is the place where the virtual desktop names and their count are stored. I don't know why they should be reset for you, it works fine here. Maybe you have some local modifications (as the fact that it works for another user suggests).

Yes, it very probably reduces to that. However I have grepped and searched quite thoroughly. I was hoping someone here knew the problem or could point me in a direction. For example, what lines would a script have to contain to change these names, and where would it have to be located?

This bug is a real pain in the ass. At version 4.2.2 in KDE it is still evident. Exactly when is someone going to get working on solving this????

Are you sure it doesn't work? I remember fixing this 7 months, 2 weeks ago:

I can assure you that it is happening as I stated. Every time
I logon, the number and names of the desktops revert(s) to the default.
