Simply create a new diagram in an empty project.   The new diagram will be added in the UML model but the central/drawing pane will be frozen (i.e does not refesh its content).

Note that when I start umbrello from the command line, I receive the following X errors:

The X errors are caused by inexistent input devices set in the default configuration of Kubuntu.  If they are removed from the configuration the central pane does not freeze anymore.

Corrections of my last comment.  The central pane does not freeze for a node or class creation but freezes on a diagram creation.
