When placing an agent in an Use case diagram, I can rename it not only double clicking it, but also clicking on it with the right mouse button in the left toolbar, inside the "Use case view" folder, and selecting "Rename".

Renaming it this way makes it appear stretched inside the diagram.

this bug looks fixed in umbrello 1.5.8 (kde 3.5.8)
