Making circular and elliptical selections would make red eye reduction easier. I know mild red eye reduction is there and usually it does good job, but sometimes it fails.

With coming digiKam 0.9.2 release, I have completly rewritten the Red-Eyes correction tool.

There is a preview now, and auto-detection of red pupil can be set finelly.

The pupil can be colored with a custom color and blured, like other pro tool can do.

From my viewpoint point, a circular or elliptical selection is not necessary... Look a fresh screenshot of the tool in action :
