Does the same happen when launching KMail standalone? Can you try to install the debug packages of kdepim, kdelibs and qt to get a better backtrace? Hi Thomas, Yes, it does the same thing for KMail standalone. I have tried installing some kdepim packages, but I guess I did not install the right ones, as I got no more info than what I have sent you. Should I install developers' package? As for qt, there are several packages as well, so I don't know which to install. On top of that, I tried to install a newer version of KDE... but the installer could not find OpenGL... same problem with finding the right package to install. I don't mind learning by trial and error, but I do miss a few cues as to what to look for, or how to recognize the right packages. I do not how Mepis names their packages.
For example, they could be named kdepim-dbg or kdepim-debug.
You need the debug packages of kdelibs, kdepim, qt and kmail (kdelibs-dbg, kdepim-dbg, qt-dbg and kmail-dbg) if they exist in Mepis.
You do not need developers packages (they should be named kdepim-dev for example).
Hi Thomas, I've tried all sorts of things, but did not get much more info on the bug. Then, I screwed up pretty much everything when I tried reinstalling KDE. I reinstalled several depending packages, and eventually nothing worked anymore. I finally decided to install Knoppix Azur instead (Kaella, the French version) in which Kmail and Kontact work fine... except it destroyed my MBR! live and learn. For now, I boot with the live CD and I hope to go with Debian when I find out how to rebuild my MBR (I still need my Windows OS for a couple of programs). Normally, the MBR shouldn't be overwritten. For example, my Kubuntu installation installed a nice bootmanager. Reinstalling grub (the linux bootmanager) should fix this. Good luck with Knoppix then! Hi Thomas, It was not the help that caused problems, but more likely my brashness at installing stuff I did not know really well. Grub had worked fine when I installed Kubuntu and Mepis, but not with Knoppix. The reason I did not stick with Kubuntu is that I positively hate this sudo thing and not being able to modify system file directly in a text editor and having to go through console, line by line to do it (for example, setting the fstab info). It ended up doubling all the information in the file everytime I touched it. The problem with Mepis was Kontact and Kmail, and with Knoppix now, it is Grub that is acting up...
