Sentry Crash Report:

Description Thierry Bizot 2007-02-23 21:34:35 UTC
Version: 2.6.18.2.34 (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from:    SuSE RPMs
OS:                Linux

I cannot install any printer. It seems the CUPS server does not works.
The exact error message is (translate from french to english) :

Impossible to extract printers list.Error message send by manager:

CUPS server connection failed.Check that CUPS server is installed and works. Error : IPP request fail for unknowed reason.

It think this problem is linked to the Suse distribution. With an other distribution I have not this problem, it works fine.

I'm newbie with Linux so it is maybe not a Linux bug but a user bug....

Can you install a printer with the CUPS-only means (commandline or web gui)?

Try this for the web GUI:

 * start Konqueror web browser
 * visit http://localhost:631/admin
 * click on "Add printer" button
 * follow instructions

If that does not let you add a printer, your problem is rather with the CUPS setup.

If you can indeed add a printer with the CUPS web GUI, please post the output of these commands:

  cat $(kde-config --localprefix)/share/config/kdeprintrc
  cat $(kde-config --localprefix)/share/config/kprinterrc

Ah, and are you sure your CUPS server is up and running?

Test it on the commandline:

  ps aux | grep cupsd
  lpstat -r

Hi,
same with me?
Before updating KDE of my SuSE 9.3 to 3.5.6 everything was fine!
My printer is correctly recognized by yast (SuSE 9.3 - cups-client-software).
Printing from non-KDE: OO, acroread is no Problem.
Printing from a KDE-program (konquerer, kmail) hangs.
kcontrol hangs when I selcet devices -> printer.
Cups-server (at the other pc) is up and waiting.
Every IP-address is fix.
Calli

Hi again,
just want to let you know, I have solved it (for me).
After about 30 min I had access as sysadmin (root) to the printer-config
in Kcontrol.
Therer I din't change anything (tried but couldn't)
but just said save actual config.
And as of this everything is fine.
Bye, Carl

Hello! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this project has been unmaintained for many years so I am closing this bug. Kcontrol has been replaced by System Settings in Plasma. Please give the latest version of that a try, and open a new bug in "systemsettings" if you continue to have an issue. Thank you!
