The following message is on my IMAP server.  It contains:

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: application/msword;
  name="030107 Agenda .doc"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
	filename="030107 Agenda .doc"
Subject: T-Board Agenda for March 1 Meeting

So basically, there is no text, only an attachment.  KMail renders this just fine, but when I save or open the attachment it gets severely truncated and (obviously) will not open in KWord or OpenOffice.

I guess I should note that I can save and view the attachment with SquirrelMail.  Haven't tried any other MUAs.

By "severely truncated", do you mean that the resulting files will be zero bytes big?

Not quite *that* severe.

The first one came from squirrelmail.  The second one came from KWord.
