Such extra option is very useful in news readers for example (Forte Agent).

In KMail just one day would be a great help for me since:
a) it would be still automatic
b) it would help avoid "stupid mistakes", when you delete something and quit realizing this was important message after all

You already can make mails expire from the context menu of the folder
