Wow, I have exactly this same problem at work, but not on all systems with NIS authentication. At home I have NIS as well, but there it does work (however, the user is configured locally in the group file as well, so that may make a difference. It's pretty hard to debug this problem when all you have is a "malformed url" message. I was about to file a wishlist item to make that more informative. Adding the user to the plugdev group using this method explained here: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianDesktopHowTo isn't enough to fix it. Which is why I've had a hard time debugging this. I had to actually edit the local group file on the client machine, adding the user (before login of course) to /etc/group in plugdev (adduser <user> plugdev should also work). Isn't this strange anyway, I doubt KDE needs to know about authentication issues, it should just be able to process the error message if it doesn't work. The OS should handle the authentication problem (and then it would use whatever is configured, like pam and NIS or LDAP or local files as stated in /etc/nsswitch.conf) Please fix this, it's a big problem for organisations with centralised authentication!
