The toolbar buttons should be greyed out if clicking will cause nothing to happen.

And even more relevant in 4.4.4 as it crashes if there is no unread mail and you try to look for previous. It always happens. A bug report is filed for this.
My is a n openSUSE 11.3 (x86_64).
