i emerged k3b with the debug use flag and my kernel has all kenrel hacking
options eneabled
hardware:teac scsi cd writer CD-W512SB

how to reproduce the bug:
*open k3bsetup and put your admin password and it will crash
* ->open k3b in console for having the verbose output,if you chmod first it
will hang without the verbose output because it will "detect the scsi drive
instead of beeing unable to acess it becaause of permissions"
  ->chmod 777 /dev/sr0
  ->go in settings then in configure k3b then fo in devices then add device
  ->then add sr0
  ->it freeze and say :
k3b: /dev/sr0 resoved to /dev/sr0


during the boot the kenrel freeze a little time when it acess the scsi bus

knoppix 5.0 has the same bug

it work in knoppix 4.0

this does not sound like a k3b bug to me. However, please try at least K3b 
0.12.17 or even better 1.0pre2.
