Description Oliver Grimm 2006-09-01 09:41:54 UTC
Version: 0.8.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.4)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

Since I am using KMyMoney now for quite some time I got the impression that saving and loading the money file takes increasingly more time. Because of this and other reasons it would be very helpful if KMymoney would provide a simple tool for splitting and merging its money files. I propose to add an item to the file menu like "manage money file" that allows to [1] split the currently loaded file based on some date range and [2] add another kmy-file before or after the current file.

To get some more ideas what could be done for managing kmy-files have a look at what pdftk can do for PDF files.

Item 1 is on our 'todo' list, but the developer (me!) doesn't have a great deal of time available at present. Item 2, if implemented, would be restricted to merging a previously split file back into it's original.

great. For [2] I see your point that it doesn't make much sense to merge files with different institutions, payees, etc. It might be a good idea though to allow importing/exporting parts of the list of transactions into CSV or ODS, thus making it easier to split/merge the list manually.

I'm not sure what ODS is, but if you build KMM from CVS HEAD, have a RDBMS and know a bit of SQL, you can currently get some of your data indirectly into CSV format by using "Save As Database". Note, at present it may not be a good idea to use the RDB as your main storage method, since it is still experimental, and also quite slow (it just treats the RDB as a sequential file).

Moving this wish to kmymoney4.

I have been using kmymoney for a number of years and it is now taking significant time to enter or edit transactions. I went looking for the archiving function only to find it does not exist. This is getting to be quite a problem for me.

"see also" added - not quite a duplicate, but related.
