Basically, I would like to see a port of the gaim equivalent:

It's a nice plugin that stores every icon used by your contacts. A great tool to increment the sense of history of people you chat with.

I could try to help in porting it, if the idea is welcome.

may i see some screenshot,  the website you pasted is not very descriptive

See the attached image. The window can be opened by a "show buddy
icons" option when right-clicking over a contact. You can save icons
right-clicking on them. Also, folders are created with all the icons.
For example:

~/.gaim/icons/msn/flikins@hotmail.com/sofdi@hotmail.com/*png

where flikins@ is my (hypothetical) account and sofdi@ is the contact,
and all icons are stored there under a hash name (it seems a sha1 in
hex .png or something like that).

The folders you point me to are interesting. I see they store the
current icon, I suppose I could make a script to gain the same
functionality if this gets not forward.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
