Description Kai Krakow 2006-08-10 12:15:44 UTC
Version: 1.9.4 (using KDE 3.5.4 Level "a" , unofficial build of SUSE )
Compiler: Target: i586-suse-linux
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.18_rc1-jen27-default

We migrated a company from using Windows/Outlook to KDE Terminal Server with Kontact.

For some people of this company it is very difficult to understand how to work around Outlook's feature to directly edit attached files in emails.

The workflow is like this: They get a mail, want to work on the attachment (e.g. an office document), and forward the mail. Or they click forward, want to edit this attachment then, and want to send this mail with the just changed attachment.

Thus, KMail should enable editing attachments of just newly created attachments (created by forwarding or by attaching). The attachment should reference the original file (just attached) or the temporary file (when forwarded) so one can just open, edit and save the attachment and then click send in KMail.

Current situation is that KMail always creates a temporary copy of the attached files which are opened read-only e.g. in OpenOffice. OpenOffice forces to save the file to a new file name which is then not referenced as the attachment in KMail. The temporary file names are too cryptic to tell which file the temporary attachment is.

I know this is some ugly feature and can lead to file changes which never reach your local file storage because the changed will only be in KMail's sent mails - but it is usual workflow of M$ Outlook users. A warning should thus be placed that changing the attachment of a forwarded will keep your changes only in the mail and not change your original copy.
