I would like to be able to filter appointments shown in kontact summary list by their category, i.e. showing appointments by category and hiding appointments by category.

This allows me to enter recurring appointments like lunch break into the calender without seeing them on the summary list (I am quite sure, I won't forget them).

This bug is pretty much addressed in KDE 4... You can filter to-dos by categories in the to-do sidebar, and you can filter all items by category using view filters.
