Embedded background images or background colors of messages should be displayed. KMail interpretes the font color of such messages but does not take into account, the some people send light text on dark backgrounds. Such mails are just unreadable in KMail. Another option would be to put a "adjust colors for high contrast" item in the menu so KMail would make such mails readable, making the foreground colors darker (or lighter) if they a below a defined contrast to your background color.
