- make sure the tray icon is enabled in the settings
- click the close (x) button in KMail's titlebar

KMail minimizes (or at least shows a minimize animation). 

Kopete, Amarok etc. don't show a minimize animation when closing them with their systray icons activated - the windows just disappear.

can not reproduce with KDE 4.3.1
