Version:           0.90 SVN (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
OS:                Linux

SVN r540014.

Open MRW file.
Edit MRW file to change anything.
Save as JPG in a different directory.
Close showFoto and return to digiKam.
Click on JPG to open in showFoto.
File > Save
Try to save as same file.  Notice that save doesn't happen, overwrite notification doesn't happen, and the save dialog just redraws.
Change file name.
Click save.
Crash.

This problem still under digikam 0.9.0-beta3 ?

This particular bug appears to be resolved Gilles.  The redraw of the save screen still happens, and I can't tell if it actually tried to save, or is just redrawing because it wants to - but there is no crash on doing the second save as a new name.  I can make a NoMachine X session available if you need to see the redraw in action on my machine.
