When the folder list is active, and pressing a character, then a folder gets selected (depends on the folder's name's first character). But selecting the folder is the only thing what kmail does. Kmail doesn't update the message list, so it display the last folder's emails.

I can confirm this (KDE-3.5.5). As some letters have a special action attached (e.g. "s" == search) I think the best thing would be to completely remove this half-working letter selection in the folder list.
