Description Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-04-26 09:43:55 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

I use explicit saved sessions.

Since a few KDE releases only applications (windows) that were restored from a session are saved when i 'Save Session'.

The only exception is a sub-session in a konsole. New konsoles aren't saved.

My current KDE Session originates from somewhere around the KDE-Version from 3-4 years ago and was updated with every following KDE-Release. I haven't tried killing "~/.kde" as there was a little bit of work in the configuration in those years. :-)

I cannot reproduce, please provide specific steps how to reproduce the problem with clean KDE setup (back up your ~/.kde somewhere and delete).
Comment 2 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-04-26 12:36:42 UTC
I think this is rather pointless as we can assume that it will work with a clean KDE setup, otherwise there would have been a bug-report earlier. Addionally i don't know how i "produced" this bug, so i don't think i can reproduce it with a clean setup.

What files do i have to edit/delete to just kill (the/all) saved sessions?
Or should it be enough to switch to "Start with empty session" with kcontrol and revert to 'Restore manually saved session' after startup with a clean session?

Or what files would you need so you may reproduce it yourself?
My complete .kde-Directoy is 1MB as a .tar.bz2 but i guess there would be a few files you don't need. :-)
My session consists of 12 Desktops, Dual-Head=2x1280x1024.
20 konsoles (many having several "sub"-windows), 1 konqueror and last but not least kwin

Files related to session management should be only ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc and ~/.kde/share/config/session/* . You could try if just using these files with a clean KDE makes it possible to reproduce the problem.
Comment 4 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-04-26 20:37:47 UTC
With the original-.kde i found out that new "konqueror"-windows are correctly saved and restored only new konsoles don't want to be saved and restored.

After i deleted .kde and started a new session all konsoles Segfault when i execute "Save Session".
Same with the session-data copied over from the backup, the "old" konsoles stay the new ones Segfault.

Then i restored .kde and deleted the said files, after this konsoles aren't saved and restored haven't tried any other program.

As i use a self-build konsole-package (The adding of the current screen to the scrollback-buffer is so annoying that i have to build the konsole-package, with the 3 lines doing that removed, myself.)
So i deinstalled my version of the package and installed the original Version (3.5.2-2) but the problem stays the same.

Any other suggestions?
Comment 5 Lubos Lunak 2006-04-27 18:50:52 UTC
Can you try something else than just konqueror and konsole?
Comment 6 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-04-27 19:24:55 UTC
I tried once with a clean session and once with my current session.
-KSysGuard
-KCalc
-KWrite
-Kate

All are saved and restored fine.
This time the additional konsole Segfaulted in both cases after executing "Save Session".

Please attach backtrace from the Konsole crash.

Backtrage of konsole crashing after "Save Session"
Comment 9 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-04-27 20:13:31 UTC
I tried to remember when i had my last changes in my session, which must have been somewhere after June 2005, and search for "konsole" in my archived daily-update-list of SID.
As i am experiencing this bug for at least about half a year now, 2 KDE releases fall into the timeframe:

KDE 3.4.2: 28.8.2005
KDE 3.4.3: 3.12.2005
Comment 10 Stefan Borggraefe 2006-07-07 02:05:43 UTC
KDE 3.5.3 contains some fixes in this area. Do you still see the bug with this release?
Comment 11 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-07-07 10:08:41 UTC
Yes. No visible change for me whatsoever.

Anything more i can provide?
Comment 12 Matthias Schniedermeyer 2006-10-13 00:01:20 UTC
First. I still had that Bug with KDE 3.5.4, on 3 different Computers, i have NOT retried with current 3.5.5(a) because:
After experimenting a bit with "kstart" i now have "manually" scripted my session.
So i won't be needing the KDE-Session-Management anymore.
