Description marseillai 2006-03-31 21:31:54 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

kde crashes with right click on desktop file. Kicker, Kdesktop crash, only GTK applications works. I have to kill kdm and launch it again to solve the problem. I think it deal with the fact i have a usb hard drive. Indeed it seems that hard drive sleep wake up wich oldly happend on desktop right clic doesn't work. It does only with a desktop's file right click if I go in ~/Desktop in konqueror it works fine.
tell me if you need log file and how i can get them...
Comment 1 Philip Rodrigues 2006-03-31 22:32:24 UTC
When kdesktop and kicker crash, you should get a crash dialog. On the backtrace tab of that dialog, you get a backtrace. Please paste it here.
Comment 2 marseillai 2006-03-31 23:53:12 UTC
there's no crash dialog! after a new try only kdesktop crash. But i have to launch it again and no crash dialog. i'll try to launch it in a konsole and look what happend.
Comment 3 marseillai 2006-04-01 00:30:41 UTC
kdesktop gives no output in konsole after crash. perhaps it's not him who crash. i'm open to suggestion. the bug is quite easily reproductible so ask for details...
Comment 4 Philip Rodrigues 2006-04-02 00:28:32 UTC
If you don't get a crash dialog, how do you know that it's kdesktop which crashed?
Comment 5 marseillai 2006-04-02 09:36:53 UTC
Because when it crashes after many test i've see that if i kill kdesktop and relaunch it works.
Comment 6 Philip Rodrigues 2006-04-02 19:00:26 UTC
Create a new user, and run KDE with that user. Does the same behaviour occur?
Comment 7 marseillai 2006-04-02 23:47:43 UTC
it seems it works fine with a new user account! i try to give him write acces on hard drive disk and it works too.
so it cames from my config file for kdesktop? but before with 3.5.1 it worked and my 3.5.2 is an upgrade ....
Comment 8 Philip Rodrigues 2006-04-04 11:36:24 UTC
Presumably it's to do with your config files then. Try renaming ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc, restart KDE and see if the bug still occurs. If it does not, please attach your kdesktoprc file.
Comment 9 Stefan Lampert 2006-04-06 23:29:35 UTC
i removed the kdesktoprc and the bugs still occurs.

kdesktoprc before renaming it

this is the kdesktoprc before i rename it! and after that it continue to crash.
may be rely to this bug :
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/37589 because it happens
only when my usb hard drive is sleeping.
Comment 11 Philip Rodrigues 2006-04-07 13:02:23 UTC
Stefan, do you also have a USB hard drive? Does the bug still occur for you with a new user account? Do you get a backtrace? Can you confirm that it's kdesktop crashing, and not some other app (say, X)?
Comment 12 Stefan Lampert 2006-04-07 16:46:52 UTC
Well, i created a new user and there is no crash.

i think its kdesktop crashing. because when killing and restarting kdesktop it works again.

no backtrace at all.

i have no USB HDD, but i got a USB HUB, with a mouse, BT-stick and a cardreader (empty) on it.
Comment 13 stefnn 2006-04-08 18:13:31 UTC
hm, maybe same here? That's what I am experiencing now:
(kde 3.5.2 on gentoo amd64 - kopete 11.1 bundled with 3.5.2)

Right click on desktop icons seems to work fine as long as I don't have kopete running. (so far my experience)

but when I have kopete running in systray (have to check if I's important to be connetected to some of the networks) and I rightclick a folder on the desktop no popup appears but instead the kopete icon in the systray gets transpartent(?) (.. or at least no longer updateded, as kopete is no longer responding) and desktop does not respond either.
If I killall kopete, everything is fine again...

Hi,

I confirm what stefnn said.

My KDE 3.5.2 packages are from kubuntu and I use the version of Kopete shipped with it.

A workaround I found was to wait until the balloon infos popup over the icon on which you wanna right-click, then, right-click. I prevents the freeze.

Comment 15 Xushi 2006-05-02 22:46:11 UTC
Happens with me. I have a firewire hard drive, with HAL and automount working. Konqueror, kfmclient, desktop all freeze along with kopete. All i need to do is just kill kopete and it's all back to normal.

I'm emerging gdb now, and will attach it to kopete's pid.
Comment 16 Stefan Lampert 2006-05-09 16:46:39 UTC
i can confirm what xushi said. when the bug occurs, just kill kopete and all works again.
Comment 17 nico rico 2006-05-12 20:21:16 UTC
I can confirm this:
Kdesktop does not crash on RMB click, it freezes i.e you have to kill it. Closing Kopete seems to have fixed the problem so it must be related to that somehow. The desktop will also freeze in konqueror on RMB click due to this.
Comment 18 marseillai 2006-05-19 18:20:58 UTC
I can confirm that killing kopete stop the freezes.
May be this bug should be rename as kopete bug ?
Comment 19 marseillai 2006-05-21 10:28:00 UTC
report here as a kopete bug : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127749
