I seem to remember that, before I upgraded from KMail 1.9 to 1.9.1, messages I was composing would be autosaved so that if I closed KMail (or if KMail was not properly shut down), the messages would re-appear the next time I would start KMail. That no longer seems to be happening in KMail 1.9.1; if I close it while composing a message, and I don't save it as a draft beforehand, the message is discarded.

I've just tested on KMail 1.9.1 revision 511298.

I cannot confirm. The email was saved when I quit and then subsequently restored when I started KMail again. It was not added to the drafts folder, though.

You need to at least wait for the "Autosave timeout" to expire.
Then the mail is saved and restored when kmail crashed.
