I realize that there are a number of similar bug reports but they all have been closed but the problem is still here.

Upon trying to send an email, I get the following message (loosely translated):

  Sending failed.
  Your SMTP-Server does not support PLAIN.
  Please choose a different authentication method.
  Server message: Error: authentication failed.

So first of all, if the message is really "authentication failed" then the conclusion that the server does not support PLAIN does not appear correct.

Going to the configuration dialogs and testing the server's capabilities results in PLAIN being the only choice.  So either the test routine is wrong or the SMTP sending routine is.

I haven't sent email from this machine in a few days but it seems that this would be related to the upgrade from 3.4.something to 3.5.1.  I did try to rebuild the configuration by making random edits in the account configuration and saving them, as has been suggested in earlier bug reports, but that didn't help.  So basically sending email doesn't work anymore here.

resurfaced. I upgraded to 4.7.2 on arch linux and suddenly this prevents me from sending mail.

If I perhaps entered the wrong kwallet password this time (the smtp one is saved), the error should be clearer and this bugs becomes a duplicate of

closing and reopening the wallet, the manager and kmail itself had no effect, so it appears the problem lies elsewhere.

The original report was exactly what I experienced, so that's an odd proposal.

What I forgot to mention was that on reboot, kmail asked me again for the server password (then everything worked). It was already stored in the wallet before and indeed it was the one for mailtransport that I removed hoping I would be asked again about it.
