My IMAP server is far away, so KMail is configured to not download attachments together with the message.

When I right-click on the attachment and pick the "Save As", I have to wait for the attachment to be downloaded into a temporary location, and only then I am presented with a file-browser dialog to pick the filename and directory.

This is wrong and wasteful even when /tmp is large enough.

The browsing dialog should come up immediately. This would not only allow me to cancel the download (a minor usability improvement), but will also allow KMail to save the downloaded file directly into the specified location without creating a (potentially HUGE and /tmp-busting) temporary file.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
