Wouldn't it be easier to just have possibility of multiple instances of image editor (bug 103351)? I think these are two different wishes. What I mean is a bit more than opening two instances, sometime it is easier to compare pictures by looking at them side by side. But ok it is harder to implement. Aperture has this kind of feature : http://www.apple.com/aperture/compare/ When opening two instances you can use window manager to place them in manner allowing for comparison. Also multiple instances are allowing for other things.
