Description Andreas Schallenberg 2006-02-03 09:43:41 UTC
Version: 0.11 (using KDE 3.5.0 Level "a" , SUSE 9.2 UNSUPPORTED)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.8-24.19-default

I'd like to be able to start a group chat
from my kopete window. Two ways of usage
seem logical to me:

a) Having a "start group chat" button which
opens an empty group chat. Afterwards being
able to drag contacts into the chat in
   order to invite them.
b) Selecting multiple contacts and right-clicking
on them. The rmb context menu should have
something like a "start group chat" entry.
This should open a group chat window and
invite the selected participants. Of course,
dragging additional persons into the window
should be possible, too (like above).

I've seen bug reports on jabber group chats
(#88250, #74291 and #95140) here and read
something about an incomplete (?) jabber group
chat implementation.

Perhaps the kopete UI should provide these
buttons whenever the user has at least one
account with a protocol supporting group chats.
It can complain if the user drags a contact into
the group-chat where no suitable protocol connection
is possible.

So this wish is twofold:
1) having the UI elements as described above
2) having jabber group chat support (which
might be already there but invisible to me)

"I've seen bug reports on jabber group chats (#88250, #74291 and #95140) here and read something about an incomplete (?) jabber group chat implementation."

AFAIK the stable Kopete only supports the obsolete groupchat 1.0 protocol which has only limited possibilities. The new Multi-User Chat protocol introduces features that IRC people are used to (and more), like kicking and banning people, granting voice or membership, and making a room password protected or read-only for non-members.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
