Version:           sconosciuto (using KDE 3.4.3, compiled sources)
Compiler:          gcc version 3.3.6
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.14.3

When I let start the "Found messages" box to find email messages KMail freezes. When the research is completed KMail come back to work and no freeze. I've got more then 20'000 messages stored in different mail folders.

A local search does not freeze so I assume that you're using an imap folder? There it freezes only when kmail waits for the search response from the server which can take some time.

No it's a local search. KMail is not responsive at all.

can not reproduce with KDE 4.3.
Yes, it slows down kmail a lot, but I can still click the "stop" button, etc.
