I have an external serial modem on /dev/ttyS0. I am trying to configure kppp to use it. 
There is some very odd behaviour with the /dev/modem symlink.  It is so odd that I have repeated 
the exact test below twice!  Basically, kppp is relying on the /dev/modem symlink even when it is explicitly
told not that the device is /dev/ttyS0.

Testing process:

1)Have working serial modem on ttyS0
2)Delete kppprc.
3)Decide whether or not to have the symlink /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyS0
4)Open kpp. Configure->Modems->New. 
  Device tab: Modem device: /dev/ttyS0
  Modem tab: Query modem.
Go to (2)

In the case where /dev/modem exists, the Query modem will be successful. In the
case where it doesn't, it will fail with "Unable to open modem".

Very weird!

Thank you for reporting this issue in KDE software. As it has been a while since this issue was reported, can we please ask you to see if you can reproduce the issue with a recent software version?

I think I (as the submitter) should mark this as resolved. There's certainly no way I can test it 17 years later, and it's a long time since I had a laptop with an inbuilt serial modem, and Mandriva is similarly ancient history!  Thanks anyway :-)
