I hope it's just my installation, else this is a critical bug.

The desktop items don't show their icon anymore, instead they show a plain text file preview of the *.desktop file.

I have kdelibs 3.5 branch from 11 November (rev. 479825) and kdebase 3.5 branch from 12 November (rev. 480038).

Workaround to _not_ treat application/x-desktop files as text files on preview.

Confirmed to have the desired result for KDesktop by Andras Mantia

Bug closed. Kdesktop is no more mantained.
