It would be very nice to have a dialog or wizard in DigiKam (and Showfoto) that contains a few test images (plus explanation on how to use them) that you can use to check the calibration of your display before editing.

There is already a Kgamma component from KDE control pannel, with advanced settings and documentation.

There is a link in digikam from Tools menu. You need to install it on your system before to use.
