People using the icon-view cannot select a single file by only clicking, because a click on the icon opens/executes it, a click next to it does nothing.

Digikam implemented that clicking on the object executes it, clicking on its surrounding area just selects it, which solves the problem stated above (bug 110178) and in the end, icon-view in koqnueror or on the desktop is just another gallery of files instead of pictures.

Of course, having a frame around an icon, as in digikam, is more obvious to mediate the "click-here-to-select"-feature, but this could be solved by either displaying such a frame when hovering the icons, or changing the background around them when hovering.

This would improve the single-click environment in konqueror, as well as on the desktop.

This got even worse in KDE4 since it does not work anymore for either konqueror's or dolphin's detail-view. In KDE 3 one was able to click next to the filename in order to select a file and not open it. Now, no matter whether one clicks on the actual object or some empty space next to it (in details view) the file is opened.

According to Aaron it is possible to not have this regression. To quote him:

the delegate can certain draw extra UI on/around the icon and click on those 
items can be used to launch/perform other actions.

Yes, please make this happen. It's very convenient in KDE3 to be able to click next to the file name to select the file. in KDE4 I end up opening lots of files I only wanted to select.
