This is kind of annoying, I was a bit too lazy to configure kmail and started to type a mail without configuring anything. It wouldn't send it and said I had to create an account first. So I saved the mail in concepts (it wouldn't even let me postpone the mail) and added an smtp server in the config menu. Then i reopened the mail saved in concepts, pressed send. 

The result was something like: you cannot send a mail without an identity. The window closed and the mail was gone from concepts map as well. VERY annoying (even although I admit it is unusuall for a user to do what I did, a mail app should never ever ever delete a mail without asking). In addition, it is rubbish you need an ID before being able to send something, smtp doesn't require that.

O how I hate having to type that mail again..it was difficult....

SMTP requires a valid from address among other things and thats what the identity is for.

But yes it should not delete emails I will agree with that.

However I just tried it here wiht a new user and I cannot reproduce the issue you are seing with 3.5 branch.

Hmm, perhaps I can try soon with 3.5 branch. Actually, there was an identity, but it had only a name, no email 
adress. And, the problem does happen if I do not save the email first in the concepts map.

ok and that bug allowing an enpty email address in the ident has since been fixed, so this really boils down to why did it delete the email, I will investigate.

The description is no longer reproducible with KDE 4.3.0
The mail composer is not closed in this way and the mail is not lost.
