i kopete you can choose how many away messages you want, 

When you go away you can't use just one time an away message you have to save it and if you want to delete an away message   there is no option.

I'm trying to find the same thing.  No luck.  I can't even find the raw file with the away messages in it.  Is it an .xml?

Oh, I'm running SUSE 9.3 and KDE 3.5, with Kopete 0.11.

I'm using Kopete 0.11.1 (KDE 3.5.1), and i don't find the dialog to remove the away messages either.

Check Kopete 0.12's new away message UI - you can set up a one time away message easily.

If you want to delete old away messages edit .kde/share/config/kopeterc, or add 5 blank new away messages in the Kopete UI.
