Version:           3.4.2 (using KDE KDE 3.4.2)
Installed from:    Mandriva RPMs
Compiler:          gcc 3.4.3 
OS:                Linux

From whatever app I try to print, be it Konqueror or KWrite, when I check the "preview" mark I then get an error "Could not open /home/artemio/tmp/kde-artemio/kdeprint_Y6fZufyj" and the preview viewer is blank.

...Still valid, can't get a preview, always this error pops up.

I guess there's something wrong with your KDE/system installation.

Please, send me the output of the commands:
ls -latr ~/.kde/
ls -latr /tmp/kde-*

Could you please also:
1) open print dialog
2) mark preview
3) Hit print
4) with the error dialog left open, look in /home/artemio/tmp/kde-artemio, in /tmp/kde-artemio and try to find if there are files of name "kdeprint*" that have creation time a few seconds ago? If yes, what are their names?
