Description Jean Ribiere 2005-06-10 11:02:00 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Slackware Packages
Compiler: gcc 3.3.4
OS: Linux

I have un scsi cd write (Yamaha) and also a ide dvd recorder
installed as ide-scsi

When I start KDE I have a message in /var/log/messages :
"kernel, Device not ready : Make sure there is a disc in the drive"
then each minute another message :
"last message repeated 115 times"

The message is not very clear because the device is not in the text.
However after search on Internet I found a user with the same problem
with a SCSI drive.

So i do the the following tests:
- in /etc/fstab I have commented the line /dev/scd0 for the SCSI cd drive :
  the problem disappears
- I have inserted a cd in the drive, the problem also disappears but
if I eject lhe cd, the problem reappears

But I have no error with the DVD recorder installed as a ide-scsi (/dev/scd1)

Ok, I consider this as a kernel "issue" (it's a bit too verbose for SCSI drives). But it's triggered by the mediamanager CD polling. So it's in fact
the same problem than the permanent activity on IDE bus some people dislike.
