Description Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2005-05-22 18:00:36 UTC
Version: 1.8 (using KDE KDE 3.4.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc 3.4.4 3.4.4-1ark from Ark Linux -- includes Visibility patch
OS: Linux

My harddisk just ran out of space while kmail was running (note to self: don't compile OpenOffice.org on a notebook ;) ).
KMail popped up a window saying "KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now", closed itself, and at the next startup, my inbox (w/ 4000+ messages) was empty.

Deleting ~/Mail/.inbox.index* solved this, but this is hardly obvious to ppl who just converted from Windoze...

I guess emergencyExit() should automatically delete the ~/Mail/.*.index* files unless the error invoking it is known not to cause potential index file corruption -- the increased startup time after a crash is greatly preferrable over ppl assuming they just lost all their mail.

Another one of the "most hated" bugs...
