since we share the camera among us, we usually don't download all the pictures from the camera and only selected ones. 
so... can you make the suggested date as name of the New Folder ( which we download images to ) based on the first image's date of the selected images

From Camera Gui, in advanced settings area, the "Use Camera Informations" / "Date-based sub-albums" isn't the right option for you ?

feature already implemented in svn trunk and stable branch.
