Description romek41 2005-05-06 09:50:08 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages
OS:                Linux

It would be great to give the kdm the ability to play some music (from the playlist defined by root) while showing the login screen. When the user logs in, the music should fade out.

stupid idea - people would spend their time at the login prompt instead of logging in and working. *g*

some thoughts on this ...
this can be modelled directly after the background images: one image, a series of images (optionally randomized), or an external image generator. i think this would offer the most useful functionality without turning kdm into a complete media player.
not that this would be particularly high on my todo list ...

and now the next will come and request videos in the background ... :}

fwiw, there is already a solution to your request, it just happens to be a bit clumsy:
you could abuse the Preloader= option for running a player.
you could also use the Setup= and Startup= scripts for this purpose.
the latter solution would work even with xdm and would additionally add the possibility to delay the session startup for the time of the fading out.

I would like to add that a notification sound that KDM is ready to login would be great. Just a short little "Hey, I'm Ready!", similar to what is available for GDM.

ok, putting it into the "useless gadgets" bug. :D
