My English is very bad - I try to do it better: When I use Konqueror as a network-browser, all SMB-servers are shown as type 'Windows Server'. But from my point of view - this is not correct. The server which is accessed here, provides an service to the clients. But the service need not to require a special operating system. For example SMB-services can be provided by various unix-systems (e.g. using samba) and are not 'Windows-only'. Maybe it is named 'Windows Server' because many novices do not know what SMB means and 'Windows' is a more common term. But in my opinion, software should not try to hide the underlaying techniques from the user or even blur the technical terms under the guise of 'user-friendliness' but rather give the user a short hint on what it can mean for him for example with little tooltips etc. So the label here has to be 'SMB Server" and maybe when the user moves with the mouse on in there will pop up an tooltip which says that this can be an windows server. salutation, Fabian I fear the problem is that "SMB server" says nothing to the usual (non technical) user Sorry, samba implements the windows standard, so "Windows" is not incorrect. But OSX also refers to "SMB" This isn't an issue in Dolphin, which pulls data from KIO. |
