Version:           1.1 (using KDE 3.4.0, compiled sources)
Compiler:          gcc version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.4.26-01-NeTraverse-i686-SMP-64GB

I am russian translator. I translate Göttingen, Düsseldorf and some similar city names into Russian, but there are these cities are shown untranslated in city name list in kstars from KDE 3.4. Why?

We've had various issues with non-ascii characters in our Cities list.  I am pretty sure all are now encoded properly with UTF8, including the two examples you gave.  If you're still having problems, the problem may be elsewhere.  I'll look into it.  Thanks for the report.

There is 4951 translated messages on Russian in kdeedu/kstars.po in KDE 3.4.1.
_ALL_ names with umlauts (68 cities) show as non translated.

Is it only umlauts that have a problem, or all non-ascii characters?
For example, did you happen to translate any of these Estonian cities?
  Narva-Jõesuu
  Põltsamaa
  Põlva
  Tõrva
  Võhma
  Võru

or São Paulo, Brazil?

All these city names are translated, but are shown in list untranslated (original names). I put screenshot later.

I can confirm that the bug still exists in current build. Seems like these city names are not picked up from kstars.mo file for utf8 locales. 

It is possible to reproduce this error in English, too: 

$ export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 && export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 && export KDELANG=en_US 

Then run kstars. City names with non-ASCII chars will be shown incorrectly. If locale is just en_US, not en_US.UTF-8, then city names are shown correctly. So it seems like it is not a kstars bug, but a bug in KDE or gettext locale handling code.

Lukas, please confirm and reassign the bug to proper people if my guess is true.

The issue is still present in v1.2.5, KDE 3.5.6 (SuSE RPMs), it's still not possible to translate, e.g., 'Jõvi' (Estonia). Any chance to get this fixed?

At present, i18n calls return proper translations for non-ASCII city names, as any other. Probably there was some confusion with encodings earlier, that got fixed in all the perturbations since then.

There is no this bug in KStars 1.4.1 (KDE 4.1.3). I close this bug.
