When invoking Tools -> Spelling... an error message pops up saying:
"The spelling program could not be started. Please make sure you have set the correct spelling program and that it is properly configured and in your PATH."
The configured spell checker is ispell, it is installed, and the shell finds it in its search path.
Then Quanta crashes with the following backtrace:

Actually, it apparently doesn't even have to do with ispell. Quanta just crashes spontaneously.

What kind of binaries do you use? This problem was reported by several 
people using binary builds, but it goes away if you compile from source 
and it is not present in the latest SuSE RPM's either. Please report 
the problem to the creator of the binary package (as well).

Thanks for the advice, Andreas. It's is the Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog package. I found they have a bug open on this one already: https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8437

Recompiling did the job for Ubuntu. Closing bug.
