There was a patche for the 3.1 source of kde available here http://freenux.org/kde/patchs/ however its not up to date. Im not sure how hard it would be to implement this, but its a far better solution than to use an external editor (in my case kvim) with kmail when it can be embeded with the kpart. I find quite awful that one of the most popular app of KDE does not use yet ktexteditor ...
