The (more or less) exact order of things that I did: 1. Install Kile and texlive packages; open Kile 2. Settings -> Configure Kile 2.1. Enable auto-inserting $ under LaTeX -> General 2.2. Set auto-indent to 4 spaces in LaTeX -> Environments 2.3. Change font in Editor -> Appearance from Hack to Fira Code Retina 2.4. Enable static word wrap and set to 120 characters in Editor -> Editing 3. Click the "New" button in the toolbar, select "Book". "Show Quick start wizard" is unchecked. 4.
