Yeah, either that or Qt4 <-> Qt5 mismatch (newer vlc versions are building against Qt5, while knotify4's phonon is obviously Qt4-based, so we get reverse of bug 335111). For 2nd issue, 'fix' is to regenerate vlc cache (which should happen magically already with newer vlc specs). It doesn't prevent the crash reported here, no. And it shouldn't be necessary either. But setting knotify as suid root can't help with this crash either. Again, if it helps with *your* crash, you have a completely different problem. The only "fix" for the problem reported here is to uninstall phonon-backend-vlc. You could also set phonon-backend-gstreamer as preferred backend, but even the Phonon settings will crash unfortunately, so you'd have to edit ~/.kde4/share/config/servicetype_profilerc manually. If you fix your PAM config, setting kcheckpass suid root is not necessary either. Unfortunately, using pam_unix2.so was the default in openSUSE <=12.3, and this somehow prevents checkpass to verify the user password without root privileges. In 13.1 it has changed to pam_unix.so, and with that it should work. But if you upgraded from earlier versions, your config will not be updated. Check for *.rpmnew files in /etc/pam.d/ and copy them over the corresponding common-xxx-pc files.
